The Story

Helianthus debilis

  • Hardy annual
  • Full sun
  • Produces many smaller, lovely pale yellow blooms.
  • Easy to grow bushy plants for borders and cutting.
  • Attracts bees and butterflies
  • Pollinator friendly

Similar to the Sunflower Hallo, these flowers have paler yellow petals than their counterparts and dark chocolate centers in contrast. A fantastic flower for pollination and also very suitable for attracting bees and butterflies, they prefer a full sun habitat to be grown in. Flowering takes place between the months of July and October, when planted in the early to mid spring. The dead flower heads can be left to feed wild birds in autumn.

Approx. 50 seeds

Sow 1 week after final spring frost, 13mm (½”) deep, 10cm (4”) apart, in well cultivated soil. Keep soil moist. Germination takes 7-21 days. Thin to final plant spacing when seedlings are well established. Can be started indoors up to 2 weeks before final frost. If started indoors, sow 2 seeds per pot and thin to strongest plant. Harden off before transplanting to garden.

Leave the dead flower heads to attract and help feed wild birds in autumn. Easy to grow, but if garden pests are a problem, start seeds indoors.

Sunflower blooms always face the rising sun, so plan wisely to be able to enjoy the flowers all day.
